WLM Diva Monitor MKII
After the successful launch of the full size WLM Diva speaker, WLM decided it was worth exploiting the potential of the concentric DIVA chassis in a smaller and thus more economical cabinet. Out came a cost efficient compact speaker hardly inferior in the reproduction of sound when compared to the taller sister.
This monitor is aiming at the music lovers preferring a smaller speaker system not only for budget reasons; a speaker that is not demanding regarding room acoustics and placement, and on top is playing in a refreshing and lively manner, so typical of monitor design speaker.
The back-to-back mounting of the two drivers on a common functional axle enabled WLM to stay within the budgetary limits and at the same time to reach unprecedented tonal results; thus offering a different and extremely interesting access to musical enjoyment. Through the direct and focused emission of the signal the listener is put closer to the essential core of the music.
Structure and functioning
The case is built in the best tradition of Austrian craftsmanship with 22 mm thick MDF-boards, has solid timber bracings for increased stability and resonance reduction.
The Diva Monitor is offered in the standard finishes of Maple, European Cherry, Zebrano and Alpi-Makassar. It is also available in Tineo and Makassar at extra cost.
The concentric twin-driver assembly consists of a medium/low chassis on to which the super tweeter is mounted. In a 2-way principle the 2 drivers are emitting the signal in perfect focus to the front.
Similar to the higher WLM models the main chassis has a hard paper cone with textile cone edge. Its notable diameter has 254 mm.
The bass reflex opens to the front of the speaker. Like the other WLM speakers, the DIVA terminal is equipped with a useful Tweeter Control. Through this sensible adjustment of the high frequencies the listener can set the Diva Monitor to match room acoustics with the special characteristics of his chain and/or his personal tastes.
The cross-over of minimalist design is built with very selective components; the high quality, strong WBT clamps (single wiring) take any type of cable end: banana, forked shoes, crimped ends.
The monitor is not very difficult to place; however it will appreciate being placed on a firm and stable stand, preferably one that has spikes to decouple it from the ground.
The Diva Monitor is a ready proof of economical limits necessitating technical solutions which in return are leading to unexpected results. The concentration on a coaxial chassis arrangement and a compact cabinet design is setting new standards.
“There are no longer listening detours”, the music is reaching the listener without time lag in the most direct and in an astonishingly natural way.
The specially matched twin chassis are capable of extremely high dynamics, ready to take forceful impulses and tuned for an emotional flow of the music. Having an efficiency factor of 97 dB, the Diva Monitor can be considered to be highly sensitive. This property plus its reliability and long life expectancy, plus its extremely attractive pricing make it a universal speaker ready for any type of application in spite of budgetary limitations.
Even though of reduced cabinet dimensions, it is delivering a very homogeneous sound image over the entire frequency scale.
To extend the lower frequencies beyond the usual level of performance WLM highly recommends the use of the Diva Control. This electronic module allows for a part active operation for a spontaneous, very precise, incredibly strong and extremely fast bass reproduction.
The neutral sound pitch makes the Diva Monitor an interesting candidate for many types of use. It is not at all demanding regarding amplification, even though especially keen to show its sensitive response capabilities when matched with tube amps. In addition, due to its coaxial type of emission, positioning in the room is a simple and easy matter; heavy and stable stands will further support its performance.
These characteristics together with its interesting pricing and time-less design make the Diva Monitor a partner for a life time, a low investment to be amortized over many years in the most pleasant way.
In short: the additional concentration on an even more cost-efficient driver principle and cabinet design has brought about a speaker nice to look at and worth listening to.
Music lovers first and foremost insist on an emotional connection with the music. Secondly, they insist – very sensibly if you ask me – that all of their music and not just a very narrow selection thereof be enjoyable. The Diva Monitor conforms perfectly to this omnivorous demand. It’s a tone monster. That makes it a fabulous addition to the retro/vintage sector of loudspeaker design where large paper cones with pleated cloth surrounds remain en vogue. Those counter the over-articulated “starving super model” ideal that’s pursued to excess elsewhere. It returns us to the earthly curves of a Sophia Loren, the power and brio of classic rock and the soulful tone of a Mes Boogie. The Diva with Diva Control is quite the package then. One of musically most convincing and thrilling speakers of the recent years. An outsider with character. Thanks to its high efficiency performing with temperament and agility even on “small” amps. Top Reference! Tom Frantzen – Stereo Test
What do I listen to? Each and every night- yup it’s the Divas, and for under 5k they really do deserve the moniker ‘diva’, for like all true divas they are truly a rare musical talent. James Hornby – Audio Addiction
